Purple Silk Dress with Shoulder Pads

I found the most gorgeous purple silk dress for $5 at Housing Works in Soho over the weekend.

It still had the original tag from Macy's for $100. Based on the shoulder pads and the vintage look of the price tag, the dress is from the 80s era.

I know it doesn't look like much in the photo, but it is a lovely shade of purple with subtle geometric patterning. The dress zips up the back and once it's on the body, the waist cinches in and creates a nice silhouette.

For winter, I am going to wear it with black tights and black platform booties, but am stumped as to how else to accessorize it.

What would you suggest? Gold jewelry? Bracelet? Short necklace or long? Should I belt it? Keep the shoulder pads, or take them out?

  1. I would have to see it on you but I always think a cool belt adds so much to a dress!! I would say take out the shoulder pads but I just saw Serena from Gossip Girl wearing a dress with shoulder pads last week!!! who knows...maybe they're making a comeback?

  3. You might be able to pull off the shoulder pads, I couldn't. I'd take 'em out. I like the tights/booties idea. Yes, gold jewelry. I feel like it needs a big belt - looks shapeless in the pic. Frankly the dress is a little scary in the pic, but you have great fashion sense so I know you can "make it work"!!
